Abstract

In order to dismantle the canonical notion of the center-periphery with which the Latin American artistic avant-gardes have been analyzed, this book proposes a situated approach, inscribed in a local setting, focusing on the points of contact and the dissimilar poetics that were developed here. In this way, it breaks with the evolutionary logic of modern art, where each ism succeeds another, leaning towards the concept of simultaneous avant-gardes, emerging everywhere and at the same time. Through a corpus of heterogeneous works, ranging from photography, visual poetry, performance and film, each chapter offers a comparative reading where art is innovation, subversion and constant appropriation.
