Abstract

The Mercosur Biennial of Visual Arts (Porto Alegre, Brazil) emerged in 1997 as a result of the desire for cultural cooperation enunciated by the member countries of the Mercado Común del Sur [Southern Common Market]. In their various editions different curatorial teams sought to produce exhibitions that rethought the conditions of reading and circulation of the regional art from its staging in the international artistic scene. This article approaches the curatorial projects of the first three editions, seeking to analyze the biennial’s functioning as an exhibition device. The text seeks to highlight the ways in which the biennial model can contribute to the production of infrastructure for the elaboration of structures for the production of own discourses.
