Abstract

The article outlines the history of processions and parades organized within the cultural sphere in Brazil since Flávio de Carvalho’s intervention in the Corpus Christi procession in São Paulo in 1931. By introducing several examples, the author outlines processions and parades as a performance of resistance in Brazil’s public domain before, during and after the military dictatorship. Tracing this history by means of examples it becomes apparent that processions and parades organized by these cultural agents try to maintain their critical potential while they have also turned into an institutionally endorsed medium.
