In The Birth of Tragedy Friedrich Nietzsche problematizes a duality between Apollo and Dionysus; vital principles that would be found in tension in all true art. While Apollo repre sents the instinct capable of giving form, which veils the pain of existence through beautiful appearance; Dionysus embodies the irrationa lity that sucks up every figure. We believe that this tension that Nietzsche discovers survives in Western culture under different masks. We will problematize here one of the forms that this survival implies in the aesthetic discus sions that go from the end of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century. We will tra ce how the tension between the formed and the formless is reformulated there around the beautiful and the sublime; and how this sym bolic configuration has its echoes, not without alterations and resignifications, in certain pic torial works of the period.Downloads
