The following article reviews the studies ca rried out around the archaeological artifacts called pre-Hispanic seals, whose function and significance are still in debate. The cri tical work is focused on the article “Emble mática y sigilografía precolombina” (2017), by Mario Jaramillo y Contreras. This author inscribes these artefacts within the field of sigillography and heraldry, following metho dological guidelines of more traditional com paratism. In contrast to his perspective, this paper proposes to retake Alfred Gell’s con cept of agency, considering seals as agents, productors social and material effects, and not just as bearers of meaning. In this con text, experimental archaeology is valued for its ability to explore the potentialities of these artifacts, not just to discover their uses and functions in their original context, but also to update nowadays their capacity for agency.Downloads
