The work of Arthur Bispo do Rosário (1909 1989), produced mostly in a psychiatric ins titution, occupies a unique position in art history, challenging the boundaries between art and mental disorder, center and peri phery, scholarly and popular. In this article, we address the relevance of his production in the contemporary context, understanding it as an “inventory of the world” constructed from the residues of industrial culture and experiences of exclusion. First, we analyze symbolic and political aspects of his crea tion, as well as its connections to Art Brut and avant-garde movements. We then focus on his collecting practices and the relations hip between marginalized subjectivity and singular forms of resistance and artistic in vention. Finally, we reiterate the relevance of Bispo’s work for broadening discussions about contemporary art.Downloads
