This article considers the ways in which the film Bacurau embraces a local way for the genre film, where the historical memory, political struggles and territorial awareness of the Brazilian sertão, along with its unconscious formations, intertwines with cathartic forms of intensity and audiovisual excess. Bacurau’s territorial commitment to fiction help us to dismantle certain colonial logics that have normalized Hollywood cinema as the universal cradle of cinematic myths; it is also notable the film’s use of those colonial anxieties, image’s liminar powers and aesthetics of extremity as means from which the imagination of displaced people responds to their historical oppressors.References
