Abstract

The book is a musicological study based on gender theories which analyzes changes in tango dancing and tango music in Buenos Aires during the first decade of the 21st century. Liska focuses on queer tango, a kind of dance which proposes to rethink the heteronormative movements of tango, and the traditionally male and female roles (sexually determined) as leader and follower, respectively. Through a socio-musical ethnography perspective, this book describes the new bodily experiences, the different subjectivities, and the changes in the gender identity patterns, offering a more general interpretation about the contemporary social and cultural transformations in Argentina.
