In the 1940s the painter Jorge Larco began a career as a historian and critic of painting. During the Argentine publishing boom, his texts were published in collections of books on art by the firms Poseidon, Futuro and Losada; in 1964, he completed the commission for a three-volume history of painting published in Madrid and, years later, he collaborated with Pinacoteca de los Genios. Among the conditions that made this writing practice possible, we focus on the modalities assumed by the production of books on visual arts in Argentina and on the image of the learned painter as an identity strategy. We argue that the figure of the author in Larco’s texts is constructed between the position of the privileged witness and that of the scholar, and consequently on two models of authority: the experience of travel and the knowledge of books.Downloads
