Image I Want You Sound: From Synesthetic Art to Psychic Cinema

This article investigates the intersection between synesthesia (a neurological phenomenon of sensory crossover) and the aesthetic strategies of abstract Cinema, from the Futurist experiences of Bruno Corra to the Structural Films of James Whitney, creators who built bridges between sound and color. Starting from the premise tha their works intentionally seek to alter the viewer’s perceptual physiology, we analyze how techniques such as pulsating light, geometric abstraction, and non-narrative montage induce hybrid sensory states. The study draws on historical sources (Corra’s Futurist Manifestos) and film analysis (Whitney’s Lapis, 1966). It concludes these pieces not only explore sensory plasticity but also question the boundaries between art and neuroscience.References
