In 1937, the Acevedo brothers and Carlos Schroeder, pioneers of Colombian cinema, produced Primeros ensayos del cine parlante nacional (First Experiments in National Talking Cinema). These images celebrate the technological leap taken by national cinema as it produced and exhibited, for the first time, synchronized sound images. Nevertheless, they reveal much more than a simple celebration of technological novelty. It seems that within them, the modernizing impulse coexists with distinctly premodern idiosyncrasies. These contradictions can be summarized as follows: cinema, a typically industrial art form, arrived in Colombia—a country that was, by all accounts, premodern. From this mixture emerges a very singular cinematic history: the Colombian one. Examining these hidden yet vivid tensions within this brief filmic piece allows us to contribute to the long-standing debate over whether a Colombian film industry has ever truly existed—not only in the past but even in the present.References
