Abstract

This work deals with the study on shading in visual arts as subject, purpose and aesthetics discourse. It is intended to show how, throughout history, shading has gained autonomy from the gradual valuation of its narrative qualities. In this sense, its bond with the sinister has a strong presence in the Romanticism, a period when the sublime also appears as an aesthetics category. Shading in art abandons, little by little, its complementary role regarding light effects in order to acquire its own powerful significance. Its relationship with the reference subject shows it as the double that introduces the other side of being and, in other occasions, as an indicial sign of an illuminated body.
