Abstract

This work summarizes the main aspects of the theory developed in the doctoral thesis La Belle Époque Argentina. Arte, arquitectura doméstica y diseño de muebles aplicados a la decoración de interiores burguesa (1860-1936) [The Belle Epoque in Argentina. Art, domestic architecture and furniture design applied to the upper-class interior design (1860-1936)] presented in the Facultad de Bellas Artes, Universidad Nacional de La Plata [School of Fine Arts, National university of La Plata]. This article analyzes the upper-class or non-modern capitalist aesthetics applied to the industrial design of contemporary furniture, the relationship between industrial design and arts and crafts, and their relation with the history of art and the architecture. With the aim of going beyond the debate, this work takes a closer look at the epistemological bases of the academic industrial design teaching and at the necessity of reformulating the design theory under the philosophical spirit of the critic.
