This Is Not a Thesis, or Is It?
An Approach to Expanded Academic Writing

Based on academicness as a gradable textual property and a complex, holistic and relational construct (Molinari, 2022), we explore the emergence of an expanded academic writing that aims to account for research involving artistic practice. Thus, we theoretically support the inclusion of multimodal, non-linear and/or performative materialities, displays and formats, especially in the thesis genre, for the construction of knowledge that, due to their experiential and processual nature, is usually excluded from hegemonic academic writing. From this perspective, we encourage the validation of the production and communication of knowledge through experimentation with other discourses and languages traditionally not considered in more conventional academic contexts. The difference, it is argued, is not aesthetic but epistemic.Downloads
