The present article makes an approach to three pictorial works exhibited at the National Historical Museum (MHN) produced towards the end of the 19th century. Belonging to the genre of historical painting, these works became important to the political and social context that was developing in Argentina. The positivist turn that translates in art with a prevailing naturalism is also supported by a symbolic construction of historical facts, towards the formation of a new national identity guided by the ideals of order and progress. The archive of the MHN that initially accompanied this process becomes critical over time and opens a new space for debate between the work and the documents.Downloads
